How it works here

GLP-1 telehealth in Tennessee: how it works.

Telehealth rules vary by state, and so does how our service works. Here is exactly what to expect in Tennessee — with the public records to verify our licensure.

  • In Tennessee, a licensed physician reviews your medical intake online and decides whether a video visit is needed.
  • James Simmons, MD is licensed to practice in Tennessee (license 247723). Verify it yourself with the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are still prescribed lawfully, in narrower cases than before the FDA shortages ended. Is compounded tirzepatide still legal in 2026? explains the federal rules with the FDA’s own dates, and how to check any provider.

Law and coverage answers checked against primary sources on September 14, 2026.

Can I get a GLP-1 prescription online in Tennessee?

Yes. You complete a short medical intake online, and a doctor licensed in Tennessee personally reviews it — Tennessee's medical board requires that you send your doctor all the relevant health information, and a doctor who cannot form an opinion from it must say so and ask for more information, refer you to be examined in person, or recommend that your own or a local doctor see you, so your doctor may message you with questions, ask you to book a video visit, or recommend that you be seen in person. If treatment is appropriate for you, your prescription is filled by a licensed US pharmacy and shipped overnight to your door anywhere in Tennessee. You may not need to visit a clinic in person.

How much does GLP-1 treatment cost in Tennessee?

Semaglutide injections start at $135/month and tirzepatide at $169/month. The price includes the medication itself, your doctor visits, ongoing medical supervision, and overnight refrigerated shipping. There is no membership fee, and the intake and your doctor's first review or visit are free: you pay nothing until you choose to start medication.

Do you take insurance?

Not at this time. For compounded medicine we charge one all-in monthly price with the medication, doctor visits, and shipping included, so there is no prior authorization. Brand-name care is $28/month for the doctor, and you buy the medicine from the maker's pharmacy. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout, and we provide itemized receipts and a Letter of Medical Necessity on request.

Which medications do you prescribe?

Compounded semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic) and compounded tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro), each as a weekly injection. Tirzepatide and semaglutide injections may contain nothing added or a B vitamin. Your doctor recommends the medication, form, and dose that fit your health history and goals.

Who prescribes my medication?

James Simmons, MD, our medical director, is licensed in Tennessee and board-certified in emergency medicine (ABEM). He personally reviews your intake, meets with you over video when either of you wants a visit, and supervises your treatment over time.

Where in Tennessee do you serve?

All of Tennessee. Care starts online and medication ships overnight statewide, so care is the same whether you're in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, or a town without a weight-management clinic nearby.

Does Medicare or TennCare cover this?

Not through Gentle Health. We do not bill Medicare, TennCare or private insurance, and everyone pays the prices shown on this page. To pursue coverage instead you would need a provider who accepts your plan and prescribes a medication it covers — the FDA-approved brands, not a compounded preparation. Where each programme stands:

  1. TennCare: Covered since August 1, 2025, and if you qualify it will cost you a few dollars a month rather than what we charge. Qualifying is its own process: prior authorization at a BMI over 30, or over 27 with a weight-related condition, a prescriber attestation that you are making complementary nutrition and lifestyle changes, documented weight loss of at least 5% to renew, and a four-injections-a-month limit. These rules have tightened twice recently, so check where they stand.
  2. Medicare: Coverage may still be possible through the federal GLP-1 Bridge: a $50 copay for Wegovy, Zepbound or Foundayo through December 31, 2027, for Part D enrollees with a BMI of 35 or more, or lower with specific heart, stroke, artery, blood-pressure, kidney or prediabetes conditions. Type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and MASH are covered through regular Part D instead.

Does Tennessee require an in-person visit before a doctor can prescribe?

No. Tenn. Code Ann. § 63-1-155(b) forms the provider-patient relationship by mutual consent and mutual communication, and the Board of Medical Examiners' rule (0880-02-.16(1)(d)) says the relationship exists whether or not there has been an encounter in person. § 63-1-155(c) also bars licensing boards from holding telehealth to a stricter standard than in-person care.

What does Tennessee require of an out-of-state compounding pharmacy?

A Tennessee licence, and for a compounding pharmacy a recent inspection. A pharmacy must hold a Tennessee Board of Pharmacy licence before shipping in, and if it compounds it must additionally supply an inspection carried out within the previous 12 months (Board of Pharmacy rule 1140-01-.08(3)); an FDA or NABP inspection can stand in for the home-state one. Tennessee also extends its own patient-counselling standards to pharmacies that mail into the state.
