GLP-1 telehealth in Michigan: how it works.
Telehealth rules vary by state, and so does how our service works. Here is exactly what to expect in Michigan — with the public records to verify our licensure.
- In Michigan, a licensed physician reviews your medical intake online and decides whether a video visit is needed.
- James Simmons, MD is licensed to practice in Michigan (license EMC0010020). Verify it yourself with the Michigan Board of Medicine.
- Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are still prescribed lawfully, in narrower cases than before the FDA shortages ended. Is compounded tirzepatide still legal in 2026? explains the federal rules with the FDA’s own dates, and how to check any provider.
Law and coverage answers checked against primary sources on September 14, 2026.
Can I get a GLP-1 prescription online in Michigan?
Yes. You complete a short medical intake online, and a doctor licensed in Michigan personally reviews it — no video visit needed (you can book one if you want it). If treatment is appropriate for you, your prescription is filled by a licensed US pharmacy and shipped overnight to your door anywhere in Michigan. You don't need to visit a clinic to start treatment.
How much does GLP-1 treatment cost in Michigan?
Semaglutide injections start at $135/month and tirzepatide at $169/month. The price includes the medication itself, your doctor visits, ongoing medical supervision, and overnight refrigerated shipping. There is no membership fee, and the intake and your doctor's first review or visit are free: you pay nothing until you choose to start medication.
Do you take insurance?
Not at this time. For compounded medicine we charge one all-in monthly price with the medication, doctor visits, and shipping included, so there is no prior authorization. Brand-name care is $28/month for the doctor, and you buy the medicine from the maker's pharmacy. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout, and we provide itemized receipts and a Letter of Medical Necessity on request.
Which medications do you prescribe?
Compounded semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic) and compounded tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro), each as a weekly injection. Tirzepatide and semaglutide injections may contain nothing added or a B vitamin. Your doctor recommends the medication, form, and dose that fit your health history and goals.
Who prescribes my medication?
James Simmons, MD, our medical director, is licensed in Michigan and board-certified in emergency medicine (ABEM). He personally reviews your intake, meets with you over video when either of you wants a visit, and supervises your treatment over time.
Where in Michigan do you serve?
All of Michigan. Care is fully online and medication ships overnight statewide, so care is the same whether you're in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Warren, Sterling Heights, or a town without a weight-management clinic nearby.
Does Medicare or Michigan Medicaid cover this?
Not through Gentle Health. We do not bill Medicare, Michigan Medicaid or private insurance, and everyone pays the prices shown on this page. To pursue coverage instead you would need a provider who accepts your plan and prescribes a medication it covers — the FDA-approved brands, not a compounded preparation. Where each programme stands:
- Michigan Medicaid: Narrowed sharply on January 1, 2026. It now covers an anti-obesity GLP-1 only where the patient has morbid obesity, has failed all other interventions, and the medication is being used to avert bariatric surgery.
- Medicare: Coverage may still be possible through the federal GLP-1 Bridge: a $50 copay for Wegovy, Zepbound or Foundayo through December 31, 2027, for Part D enrollees with a BMI of 35 or more, or lower with specific heart, stroke, artery, blood-pressure, kidney or prediabetes conditions. Type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and MASH are covered through regular Part D instead.
Does Michigan require an in-person visit before a doctor can prescribe?
No. MCL 333.16285 permits prescribing through telehealth with no in-person-exam precondition, subject to scope of practice and to duties around referral and follow-up, and Board of Medicine rule R 338.2407 holds telehealth to the same standard of care as an in-person visit. Michigan's stricter bona fide relationship rule (MCL 333.7303a) reaches only schedule 2 to 5 controlled substances, which GLP-1s are not. Your consent to be treated by telehealth is required (MCL 333.16284).
What does Michigan require of a pharmacy that compounds sterile injections?
A pharmacy outside Michigan must hold a Michigan licence to ship in (MCL 333.17748), and if it compounds sterile preparations it must additionally hold board-recognised accreditation or supply a qualifying inspection report from within the previous 18 months — at first licensing and again at every renewal (R 338.534). A pharmacy registered as an outsourcing facility follows a separate inspection rule instead. Michigan reissued these pharmacy rules effective March 12, 2026.
