How it works here

GLP-1 telehealth in Louisiana: how it works.

Telehealth rules vary by state, and so does how our service works. Here is exactly what to expect in Louisiana — with the public records to verify our licensure.

  • In Louisiana, care starts with a live video visit — booked online, taken from home.
  • James Simmons, MD is licensed to practice in Louisiana (license 353696). Verify it yourself with the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are still prescribed lawfully, in narrower cases than before the FDA shortages ended. Is compounded tirzepatide still legal in 2026? explains the federal rules with the FDA’s own dates, and how to check any provider.

Law and coverage answers checked against primary sources on September 7, 2026.

Can I get a GLP-1 prescription online in Louisiana?

Yes. You complete a short medical intake, then meet a doctor licensed in Louisiana over video. If treatment is appropriate for you, your prescription is filled by a licensed US pharmacy and shipped overnight to your door anywhere in Louisiana. You don't need to visit a clinic to start treatment.

How much does GLP-1 treatment cost in Louisiana?

Semaglutide injections start at $135/month and tirzepatide at $169/month. The price includes the medication itself, your doctor visits, ongoing medical supervision, and overnight refrigerated shipping. There is no membership fee, and the intake and your doctor's first review or visit are free: you pay nothing until you choose to start medication.

Do you take insurance?

Not at this time. For compounded medicine we charge one all-in monthly price with the medication, doctor visits, and shipping included, so there is no prior authorization. Brand-name care is $28/month for the doctor, and you buy the medicine from the maker's pharmacy. HSA and FSA cards are accepted at checkout, and we provide itemized receipts and a Letter of Medical Necessity on request.

Which medications do you prescribe?

Compounded semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic) and compounded tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro), each as a weekly injection. Tirzepatide and semaglutide injections may contain nothing added or a B vitamin. Your doctor recommends the medication, form, and dose that fit your health history and goals.

Who prescribes my medication?

James Simmons, MD, our medical director, is licensed in Louisiana and board-certified in emergency medicine (ABEM). He reviews your intake, meets with you over video, and supervises your treatment over time.

Where in Louisiana do you serve?

All of Louisiana. Visits are over video and medication ships overnight statewide, so care is the same whether you're in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Metairie, or a town without a weight-management clinic nearby.

Does Medicare or Louisiana Medicaid cover this?

Not through Gentle Health. We do not bill Medicare, Louisiana Medicaid or private insurance, and everyone pays the prices shown on this page. To pursue coverage instead you would need a provider who accepts your plan and prescribes a medication it covers — the FDA-approved brands, not a compounded preparation. Where each programme stands:

  1. Louisiana Medicaid: Not for obesity on its own. Wegovy is approved only alongside established cardiovascular disease from age 45, or for MASH liver disease; Zepbound only for moderate-to-severe sleep apnoea confirmed by a sleep study. Both want prior authorization and a signed treatment agreement.
  2. Act 898, signed 9 June 2026: Louisiana has passed a law that would make Medicaid cover FDA-approved weight-loss medication and would forbid step therapy. It is not in force. The Act starts only once the Legislature appropriates money for it, and the January 2027 date in circulation is the Health Department's planning assumption rather than a commitment. It would reach the approved brands, not a compounded preparation.
  3. Medicare: Coverage may still be possible through the federal GLP-1 Bridge: a $50 copay for Wegovy, Zepbound or Foundayo through December 31, 2027, for Part D enrollees with a BMI of 35 or more, or lower with specific heart, stroke, artery, blood-pressure, kidney or prediabetes conditions. Type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and MASH are covered through regular Part D instead.

Does the pharmacy shipping my medication have to be licensed in Louisiana?

Yes. Under La. R.S. 37:1232 a pharmacy outside Louisiana that dispenses to residents here must hold a Louisiana nonresident permit, hand the Board of Pharmacy its most recent home-state inspection report along with any FDA or DEA findings, and stay open to inspection by that Board. Its pharmacist-in-charge needs an active Louisiana licence, and sterile compounding needs the Board's approval separately. This is enforced rather than nominal: in November 2025 the Board fined an out-of-state pharmacy $20,000 for dispensing into Louisiana on an expired permit.
