Start with the exact prescription
Ask whether your prescription is for Wegovy tablets or injections, and which strength. Both formulations have FDA-approved weight-management uses, but their doses, administration instructions, and eligible patient populations differ. That distinction matters financially, too. A starting-dose advertisement does not tell you what a later prescription will cost. Ask for the price at your current dose and at any dose your clinician is considering—not a promise that your dose will increase.

What insurance changes
Eligible patients with commercial insurance that covers Wegovy may pay as little as $25 under the manufacturer’s offer. Savings are capped at $100 per month, so $25 is not guaranteed for every covered patient. Government-insured patients are excluded from that commercial savings offer. Wegovy savings terms
A useful question for your insurer is: “What would this exact prescription cost after any required authorization, at an in-network pharmacy?” Then ask whether the answer changes before and after your deductible. An estimated benefit is not the same as an approved pharmacy claim.
For Medicare, do not rely on older blanket statements that weight-loss medications are never covered. An oral compounded semaglutide preparation made by a licensed pharmacy is not the FDA-approved Wegovy tablet. A brand’s approval or clinical-trial results should not be treated as evidence of the same results from a compounded formulation. Cost belongs in that discussion, but an insurance exclusion alone does not establish that compounding is appropriate. FDA advises using compounded GLP-1 products only when a patient’s medical needs cannot be met by an approved drug. Safety belongs in the decision
Wegovy is not appropriate for everyone. Its labeling includes a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents and contraindications for a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Is a cheaper compounded prescription automatically the better deal?
No. First establish which treatments are medically appropriate. Then compare your actual covered or self-pay cost, the formulation, follow-up care, and the limitations of each option. A low copay for an approved medication can be less expensive than a compounded program.
